Most of that cost is in the Commandant, the Captain, the Lieutenants, the Sergeants, and Correctional Officers needed to keep them where they are. I'd say it's a fair bargain to keep murderers, muggers, burglars, and rapists in their place. The law does not allow execution except in the most severe cases, so you should sleep well at night knowing that 55,000/yr of you and your neighbors tax money is going to ensure the discomfort and degradation of some putz from your state who would otherwise be free to harm you and yours. I've done some time in my past so I can tell you, no matter what Dateline tells you, it is no picnic in a State Pen.
I'm not in the US but in the UK it costs an average of £33,000 to keep a prisoner for one year..which is close to your US $...to earn that kind of money you'd need to have a degree or a high/professional qualification..infact most with a degree wont earn that much a year..my opinion? its perfectic!
It's very excessive, but it costs more to kill them than to leave them in the prison enjoying things that people in the lower part of society can't even enjoy.
When people are guilty of probation violation why aren't they just tossed in jail? Why no consequences in some cases except a lecture?

You're reading A friend of mine tells me that in XYZ state prison it cost $55k per year for each prisoner. Many ppl raise families on less than this. Is this excessive? Thoughts pls?

I'm just saying that the cost is a bit much and could be decreased
Not to treat prisoners less than human or kill them
The budge could be cut quite a bit if they didn't have an endless well of tax payer money to draw from

Could a Correctional Officer or Librarian be cut to save a few bucks? Yes. But that would be trivial, and not address the issue that there are many redundancies in manpower in any Federal or State Government institution. People assume that"$55,000 a year is being spent to keep this Criminal in the lap of luxury" while the truth is that $55,000 a year may very well go to their uncle, the Corrections Lieutenant, who is working 50 hr weeks in a dangerous environment for his modest pension, which is also included in that $55,000/per inmate, and affords him a life expectancy of 51 years, (meaning HE will not benefit from his pension, but his children and spouse." People don't read deeply enough into headlines to see the bullshit in this "$55,000-a-year" statement.

Amen to that.

People not getting the full story before making assumptions.
by YellowRatBASTARD on November 12th, 2009
Thx, Rat. What I'm saying is, that these prisoners are fed shit, clothed in shit, and surrounded by shit. The money goes to keep the system running, and there are alot of people on the State and Federal tit, including Corrections officers, State Police, Dog Wardens, and Sewer Suckers. All perform a thankless, menial, but no less important service, which costs money. Maybe you'd like to take your pick from these job descriptions, and decide which you'd like to volunteer for to save the State a few sheckles.

Hardly
Countless documentaries have ppl openly admitting that they commit petty crime to go to prison.
Many are a healthy weight when going in, and GAIN weight in prison
There are some fat motherf**kers in the fed and state.
There is no need for tv, much less cable tv, weight rooms, rec rooms, conjugal visits
These all cost $$$
and are completely un-nessasary
If cost were cut and every worker were to get a raise and the cost was still $55k I would back it.
I didn't break the law, you did, don't get pissed at me because you did time
And I don't believe in the club fed.

Don't believe that your white-bread fantasy world is what goes on in the rest of the universe. Documentaries are for fat, smarmy shmucks like Michael Moore, and tell the story they want. I'm telling both sides from a first-hand perspective. I'm not pissed at anyone. I'm simply telling you that you have a very Entertainment Tonight outlook on this subject and, from experience, I can tell you you know less than nothing, except what your friend told you.

Not at all. People come back 3-4 times a year on petty charges to fatten up. If you're a crackhead, that's more food than you've seen in a year. They could just as easily show up at Bellview, and get psych evaluations and get free food. There is abuse in any bureaucracy. You might as well be pissed at the 5 supervisors and 15 workers from your local D.O.T. standing on the side of the highway coffee-klatching and not doing much else. The cost of feeding a prisoner is in the 4-5 dollar-a-day range. If they're getting fat, it's because that's more food than their used to seeing. Prisoners pay for their TV's through their commissary accounts(provided by people on the outside, not the State) and their cable through the same account. NO pay, NO cable.
