Help answer this question below.
Many of the legal questions were being argued between the lawyers, or by the prosecution and the judge. at the beginning of the trial, there was a question of his mental state, however, because he chose to defend himself, this was never addressed. and the fact that he did defend himself, there were problems with the actual execution of the arguments, and use of the proper court procedures.
Seven years is quite a short time between conviction and execution. Capital convicts have a number of possible state and federal appeals available to them and the execution may not happen until all of those options (at the choice of the convict) have been taken.
It always amazes me to find how many people are still amazed that we don't have the rights that our citizens are supposed to have, among them, the right to a fair and speedy trial. I'm not blaming Bush, our institutions were broken before he took office, but he did fiddle through his watch as our Constitution burned. The Patriot Act and Homeland Security ring a bell? And Obama hasn't kept campaign promise one because there was no intention of undoing what's been done. What did it cost taxpayers to keep that arrogant asshole alive for 7 years? Not a drop in the ocean of the impossible debt we've incurred through our silent support of 'the emperor's new clothes'.
Stupidity or a fast execution would of prevented the lawyers from getting paid. Why save the kid?
You have to understand the legal system to understand this. You can't have one process for a someone who is obviously guilty and another for someone where the evidence is more ambiguous.
Prosecutors will try to put everyone on the fast track and trust me, they don't care if innocent people die so long as their record looks good.
Because only God can know guilt absolutely, we can only make opinions after long inquiry.
I will say that is true about only god knowing for sure, however in this case it was quite clear indeed that he done it, the gun matched, They had 2 confessions, the trunk of the car is how he laid down and shot, everything fell into place, i would say there is no doubt.
If ever there was no doubt in a case, this is one of them.

That is true, about the mental state, we have a tendency to question mental state quite a lot, never thought about that one.

His former wife divorced him because of unresolved mental health issues. this was not bought to light until after the trial, and was never a real factor during the trial. Also, his partner in the crimes claimed that the two of them had a sexual relationship also, so there were many issues that had to be dealt with.

And lets not forget that lawyers have a nearly infinite number of tactics to drag things out and tie the proceedings up in trivialities.

I think that is a lot of the problem, the lawyers, want to drag it out and make as much money as possible.
Also it would look great on their record if they could indeed get him off on any defense, insanity included.
