I am fortunate in that I can sum people up pretty well online. I have met many people I have initially come to know online, and they have without exception, turned out to be exactly the people they seemed to be.

But even I was caught out once by someone I liked very much, who 'died' while the whole saga was relayed by her 'sister'. Eventually this person was resurrected, and explained why it happened, which was unusual in these cases. Apparently she had used her 'illness' as a way of escaping from a difficult online situation, and things had gone on from there. Because so many people had been really upset by her 'death' she eventually reappeared, but of course the friendship was over.

When you see someone doing this kind of thing, it is usually easy to spot inconsistencies or out-of-character mistakes. But then you think, what if I am wrong? What if he is *really* dying/bereaved? When I am slightly uneasy about the initial situation I normally stay out of it. But those people who find out the facts and face up to the difficult task of telling others what they have found deserve the most sincere congratulations. It is a difficult thing to do, and carries no reward.

Depends on the person in question. There have been some who I trusted right away...other I grew to trust. Same as in real life.
