Written communication dates back to at LEAST several thousand years BCE - with the first recorded civilisation with written communication being "Uruk".
They had rudimentary internet connection. I think it was called dail-up
Written languages had been invented (heiroglyphs, etc), but there was no official media. News and other information was spread by word of mouth, as most of the population at the time was illiterate.
