With reading being one of the weakest academic areas in the US, I'd say let's start doing it right. Start with the alphabet.

Of course it is.The alphabet is the basis on which they learn reading words.

- well I don't think there is any "ofcourse" about it, my 3 year old can recognize some words although she does not know the whole alphabet yet, she only knows a couple of letters. I can't see why it is important to learn T is teee. But My first born did learn the alphabet and to read, but my second struggled to just recognize the whole words, she would pronounce words letter by letter, and it just confused her. I'm wondering therefor if anyone ever has learned to read without knowing the alphabet first.

- It seems i misunderstood your question,as i thought you were implying kids don't need to learn the alphabet.Of course some kids might learn how to read some words before they learn the alphabet.What i mean is that the alphabet must be learned in order for the kid to develop his/her language skills.
