The Inappropriate and Unsubstantiated Alarm Over Aspartame

    1. Aspartame does cause the production of small amounts of methanol, but no more than normal consumption of fruits and vegetables.

    2. There are about 200 mg of aspartame in 12 ounces of most diet drinks. Even with greater than 2000 mg of aspartame, there is no change in the levels of methanol in normal adults. Normal volunteers have taken 600 mg/hour of aspartame for 8 hours without significant increases in serum methanol. Normal men have taken 10,000 mg of aspartame without any side effects.

    3. Infants who have received equivalently enormous doses of aspartame show no increase in serum methanol levels.

    4. Methanol itself is not the problem in "methanol poisoning". It is the generation of formic acid when the methanol is very high that causes the dangerous acidosis and the blindness. Normal volunteers have taken 14,000 mg of aspartame. Even though their methanol levels rose, the formic acid did not. The methanol levels returned to normal within 8 hours.

    5. When aspartame-containing beverages are left at high storage temperatures, the aspartame can degrade and form small amounts of methanol.

    6. Diketopiperazine (DKP) is another breakdown product of aspartame. It has not been show to be carcinogenic (causes cancers).

    7. There is no connection between "Desert Storm Syndrome" and aspartame.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of the World Health Organization, as well as other prestigious regulatory and health bodies agree that aspartame is safe, but there have been other tests that say otherwise. Alleged harmful effects of aspartame ingestion include seizures and a change in the level of dopamine, a brain neurotransmitter. Symptoms associated with lupus, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease have been claimed to result from an excess intake of aspartame. As well, aspartame consumption is claimed to increase the difficulty of diet-dependent diabetics in regulating their blood glucose level. These alleged dangers of Aspartame seem to increase when it is in an elevated temperature of about 90° Fahrenheit, a component of aspartame can convert to formaldehyde. High concentrations of formaldehyde can kill cells and tissues. Furthermore, formaldehyde can, in turn, be converted to formic acid, which can cause metabolic acidosis. Allegation of the dangers still remain controversial.

There is some evidence ( I don't know how strong) that aspartime is a carinogenic substance - that means enough of it could trigger cancerous changes in cells. However I remember reading that even if the study was correct it would have to be a pretty high consumption.

Apartime is an unnatural substance, unlike fruit sugar based sweetners. I know people who have been advised to avoid it if they have dental problems (it softens the enamel for a period after drinking), depression and constipation.

    Nice.

Why not have a glass of water instead!

Personally artificial sweeteners give me headaches so I don't use them.

There is a theory that aspertame poisening is a health threat. It is true that some people are alergic to this additive. If you are having unusual health issues and the cause cannot be identified, you may consider eliminating aspartame from your diet in order to determine if that product is the cause of the health problem.
