What do chimps, etc. do?
Maybe it was actually more advantageous to not have them short, so they could be used as a kind of tool themselves? They would have been worn down, or broken - and maybe they bit them.
the nails were naturally worn down by the elements.

We could ask the same question about hair, by the way, but early hair was African and frizzy. So early humans all had Afros. Works nicely to keep the hot African sun off one's shoulders.
