It probably originated from some society where you could chose your manner of execution. I don't know, but that's my guess.

That saying is about what sort of drink you would like, you here it the movies ,mainly in the old western movies ,but as for where it originated from i have no idea.+4

Wasn't this a weird way the Greeks allowed revered people to execute themselves? With dignity?

Alcohol is, in fact, a poison, I think the phrase was derived from that.
