From a computer repair point of view... we are finding that the MAX time for a laptop, with general useage is five years. That is the point when little things start to go wrong with it (power connecters, hinges, missing keys, etc.)

They start getting outmoded when you press the on switch the first time.
    .
But if you only want to use it to do very simple tasks with programs the internet doesn't require much for one can last you probably ten years or more with minor repairs. Plus the technicians will get a lot of amusement out of fixing it.

I know quite a few that have been around for 5 years or more, though the batteries tend to need replacing about every year or two. The current trend towards making laptops wafer-thin is decreasing their lifespan considerable, but if you are willing to settle for something a bit thicker then you will find that they often last longer than they are relevant.

I have a Powerbook 180 that, aside from a dead NiCad pack, still runs as good as it did when it was new. Sure, it's slow as hell by todays standards and lacks things such as wifi, USB, optical drive, color screen, or the ability to read anything other than 800K floppies, but it was state of the art 15 years ago!
