• it was a beautiful country and it was really sad seeing all the evidence of the war a few years ago. i did not once feel unsafe there. though i stuck to the tourist areas. i'm not one to risk my safety in a foreign country!

• The U.S. Department of State rates Peru as critical for crime. Peru is said to have one of the highest reported crime rates in Latin America, with the Peruvian National Police (PNP) reporting that a crime occurs every three minutes in the capital city of Lima. Although violent crime against foreigners is relatively rare and has declined overall compared to last year, it can and does happen. All U.S. and foreign visitors are vulnerable to crime, as they are often perceived to be wealthier than the local populace and more likely to be carrying large amounts of cash and other valuables.

  My wife is from Peru. I lived there for nearly two years and visited many times. Over that span, all that's ever happened to me, is that a pickpocket picked a camera from my pocket in a night club.
  I don't think that's too bad.
  
  If I listened to all the tarvel advisories, I'd never go anywhere!

• Likewise, I had no hesitation and had a great time there. I had some travelers checks stolen from my checked luggage, but no biggie, they were replaced.
