This is what leads a large number of people to have a more relaxed view of Christianity. It's just not conceivable to most people that a person who is kind and selfless would spend eternity in hell just because he does not believe in God.

Ok Galenda. So, if I took it in a biological sense, if I don't follow EVERYTHING my mother tells me to do, then I therefore should be dead? That makes no sense! What if my mother doesn't know what exactly is best for my life, she can only go by what she knows from her parents and that is usually how the cycle of terrible lives keep going. The next generation needs to think for themselves and see what the last generation did wrong to not have the same mistakes. They make their own mistakes and then it is learned onto the next generation.

This is my attempt to answer it, and appologies if it sounds preachy. One of my aims is to show how the Bible sees this issue.

    From a Biblical perspective:
It doesn't matter in one sense how "good" you are. What matters is what side you are on. A person can be a good friend to his comrades, help them out, take a bullet for them but still be a terrorist bent on bombing my house. In that case, it doesn't matter how good he is, because he/she is still my enemy.

That's kind of what it's like in terms of our position with God.
Here’s a little more theological background:
    1) God is the loving Ruler of the World. He created it and us and is the rightful King.
    2) God created humans to rule the world but always under His authority.
    3) Humans reject God the King by trying to live their own way without Him. This is what the Bible calls sin. Sin isn't just breaking rules; It is willful rebellious independance that seeks autonomy without God. Many of the world's problems I think are caused by all of us, including myself, running around trying to be our own little gods and doing what we want.
    4) God is just, loving and cares about the way we treat ourselves, each other and Him. If we continue in sin/rebellion, He will one day give us what we want: An existence without Him and thus without all that is good. This is death and what the Bible calls "Hell". A just and loving God punishes sin. If He didn't, He would be unjust and like a negligent parent.
    5) But because God loved us so much, He sent His own Son into the world, the man Jesus Christ. Unlike us, Jesus the man always did what God wanted Him to do, so didn't deserve to die. Yet by dying in our place, Jesus took the punishment we deserved in order to restore our relationship with God.

    6) God raised Jesus to life again as Ruler of the world. He will return to judge the living and the dead. So this leaves Humanity in two positions they can take up:

    a) Continue in rebellion, rejecting God's Rulership and eventually getting what they want. ie. Hell.

    b) Instead of rebelling, we submit to Jesus as our Ruler and trust in His death in our place for a right standing with God. This is, from a Biblical perspective, God's appointed way of crossing over from side a to side b. IF that's true, then any other way of living or trying to approach God is again human rebellion and wilful sinful independence seeking to do things “my way”. Even if a person is good, they can still be on side a. Those on side B are treated like they never rebelled in the first place and have eternal life, not because they deserve it, but because Christ died for them.

no no no, if your an upstanding person you can go to heaven. problem is your not. why would an atheist want to go to heaven? The reason anyone goes to hell is for the rejection of rhe Light/Truth/Christ. Everyone is a sinner, EVERYONE that hs ever existed or will exist save one tht is Jesus Christ. God knows this, and He can either destroy it all now including you because you are part of it, or He can be patient and give you time to wake up, and see if you express the will to repent and know Him.

If someone is an atheist, then they already do not believe in heaven or hell. Right? Now if they are worried about going to hell because they were a good person, but didn't believe in God... then they believe that there is 'something' to this God thing, or it wouldn't be on their mind. You can't have it both ways. So what's up with that? God gave us the freedom of choice, to believe or not believe. To accept or not accept. To have faith in Him or not. There are many denominations of Christianity that will be in heaven. God looks at the heart of a man. Not the denomination.

For an atheist... why would it matter if they're going to Hell. They don't believe in it anyway, nor do they believe in heaven. It's a mute point to them. They don't believe in God, therefore there are no ramifications of heaven or hell.

As Christians, we have an eternal hope. Our hope is in heaven through our faith and belief in Jesus Christ. There are different churches. The bottom line is faith and belief in Jesus Christ and His resurrection and return. Many different denominations will be in heaven as long as they are the body of Christ.

The denomination (branch) of Christianity is not important, as long as a person has a true "rebirth" through Jesus. This assures his/her salvation (going to heaven). An atheist does not have this "rebirth" through Jesus. Therefore they will not spend eternity with God.
Heaven has nothing to do with how nice or 'upstanding' a person is.

I believe that God will judge us according to the light we've received and what we've done with it. I also believe that some will be able to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ in the spirit world and have an opportunity to accept or reject it, if they didn't have a proper opportunity in their lifetime.

    1 Peter 4-6
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
