  • These days the constant exposure to the misleading statistics about divorce is what is scary to unmarried people. They hear that the rate of divorce is 1 to every 3 marriages. What that really means is that during the reporting period, 1 marriage ended for every three marriages that started. Is does NOT mean that out of every single marriage since the beginning of time, 1/3 of them end. If six couples get married over a long period of time and five of them stay married, but one couple gets divorced three times during the same time, that would be a "rate" of 1 out of 3. It is hard to explain, but I wish people would not misunderstand the marriage and divorce "rate".
