Learning is a natural life process for intelligent creatures but mature intelligent adult human beings should be able to reason for themselves what is irrational and unnatural but they too often don't bother. "Everybody believes in it so it must be true"evidently constitutes logic. So conform or burn in hell, I guess.

It is a way of showing loyalty to a cause. Faith is the courage to believe what you know to be untrue. Various movements ask us to believe in the obviously irrational so as to test our fidelity. There are benefits to this. Which army would you rather fight against? A one full of rational people with rational fears or one in which the members thought they would go to Valhalla if they died in combat? And which army do you think would be more likely to pass on their genes to the next generation? We are all born with an instinct for believing the absurd.
