I think you need some type of teaching certificate or some kind of qualification if you want a good paying english teaching job. But I've known people that just go there and find a job. It's not that hard if you're a native english speaker. If you can, try Japan over China. Much better over there.
My friend's daughter worked over in Japan teaching businessmen how to speak American English (business terms, slang, etc.), but they already know english. She absolutely loves it.

Mostly you just need a degree. I have met a lot of couples teaching in China, Korea and Taiwan. You can do it, however finding the same job and housing could be a bit more difficult. Here's a starters guide to Teach English in Asia
