A am from the south, correct pronunciation is not required here.
no, I just go ahead and fail
Hello June:
No, I learn how to pronounce it.
excon
I avoid using it in speech if I know I'm pronouncing it incorrectly. There have been a few times that I thought I had the correct pronunciation, but was wrong. These are usually words that I see in text, but never hear anyone say out loud. I take that to mean other people don't know how to pronounce them either.
No but I always ask others if I'm pronouncing certain words correctly, especially words in a foreign language.
That depends. If I have a source to consult, like Google, or a dictionary, I will still use the word. If I'm in the middle of a conversation, however, I will try to find a synonym that I know how to pronounce.
If I'm aware that I don't know how to pronounce it, then yes, I'd avoid using it. But there are words that I've been pronouncing incorrectly most of of my life, and I just never knew because they aren't commonly used words. Ex. "chagrin" is properly pronounced [.ʃə.'gɹɪn.], but I always pronounced it [.'tʃæ.gɹɪn.].
Whenever I have the chance, I go to the dictionary to check its pronunciation.
I avoid it until I can look up the pronunciation. Or I say it in a way that is obviously intentionally wrong as a sort of joke.
I would ask a friend that did know or look it up in a phonetic dictionary.
No, I just go ahead and butcher it and hope that people understand what I am trying to say.
