CAT5 cable is different and that is what you need for a LAN. The connectors look kind of the same, but they are totally different.
You can do it without a modem, but you *do* need Ethernet. That isn't much of an issue since most systems have Ethernet built into the motherboard and you can get cards for nothing if you need one.
Of course, you will need a router or hub unless you are only networking two computers. Also, if you are connecting two computers directly without a hub/router, you need a "Crossover" cable, not a regular CAT5 cable.
