There are many options to explore when choosing how to manage Attention- Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) for yourself or someone you care for. It is important to know and to research what is used to treat ADHD.
Medications
According to the National Institutes of Mental Health, stimulants are the most commonly prescribed medication. Stimulants most widely used are Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana (Methylphenidate), Adderall (Dextroamphetamine-amphetamine), Dexedrine (Dextroamphetamine). Atomoxetine (Strattera) is the most common non-stimulant medication prescribed.
Behavioral Therapy
The goal here is to teach self-behavior monitoring, coping skills, anger management and task completion. Often behavior therapy will be accompanied by drug therapy.
Other Types of Therapy
Some of the different kinds of therapies used for ADHD treatment could involve family counseling, relaxation therapy, social skills and parenting training. A combination of therapies and medications is often the best approach in treatment.
Alternative Medicine
Many parents--when faced with giving their young child amphetamines and stimulants--research treatments that involve less narcotic intervention. Common alternative treatments are special diets, herbal supplements, vitamin supplements and yoga. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is little evidence that ADHD treatments will eliminate the symptoms, but some can help.
Considerations
Deciding what to use to treat ADHD, even alternate treatments, is something that must be discussed with your physician or a mental health professional.
