<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Contamination Controversy
In 2008, the FDA announced that a variety of food products contaminated with melamine had been imported to the United States from China and were being recalled. A similar event occurred in 2007 when melamine was discovered in a number of pet foods, causing many pets to die or get very ill. A report from the National Toxicology Program has stated that "some kitchenware based on melamine resin leach considerable amounts of melamine monomer."
On the Other: Safe in Low Amounts
Several FDA reports have suggested that the presence of melamine in low amounts in food and plastic products is safe for human consumption. One report suggested that the compound has a very low solubility, meaning it's not easily absorbed by the bloodstream even if ingested.
Bottom Line
If you're concerned about melamine contamination, look for melamine-free dishware when you're shopping. Hand-wash your existing plastic dishware and avoid putting it in the microwave, or consider using it to store or display something other than food. Throw it away if it becomes chipped or scratched, as this may make it easier for chemicals to leach out.
