  • Thanks to today's technology, the world is at your fingertips. It is now possible to learn just about anything from the comfort of your own home. There are numerous sources for learning to touch-type online, from online universities to free websites--all offering you the opportunity to gain the knowledge and ability you are seeking.

    Universities and Colleges

Most all universities and community colleges offer some form of distance learning. There are also online universities--offering online learning exclusively. Fees and requirements vary greatly. It is recommended that you thoroughly research any prospective schools before enrolling or committing to anything. Your local community college, more likely than not, offers courses online. You can obtain a list of available courses and subjects by calling or visiting the school's website. In most cases, a high school diploma or GED will be required to enroll in classes.

    Free Courses and Tutors

Depending on your purpose for wanting to learn touch-typing, a college or online university may not be necessary. There are at least six reputable websites that offer typing tutors and courses. If you want to brush up or even learn from scratch, these sites are a viable source for learning to type. Sense-lang.org is but one example of free lessons available online to learn touch-typing. Each lesson is specific, and you can move through or repeat them at your own pace. Besides the tutorials, you can test your typing speed, play typing games and also learn the numeric keypad. You are not required to register or provide any personal information. However, though your progress is shown while you move through each exercise, since you don't have to log in upon entering the site, only each session's progress is available. Once you exit the site, your statistics are not saved.

    Freeware and Downloadable Software

Various programs are available to download for free. However, not all of them are worth the time or effort. Before downloading any software, be sure you are getting a full version. A lot of freeware offers only partial access to the software's abilities, which only become available if you decide to purchase an access code to unlock them. One program that delivers what it promises is Rapid Typing Zone. It is available for free at Rapidtyping.com. Every program is guaranteed virus free. This typing tutor will assist the beginner or the advanced typing student and is extremely user friendly.
