  • Cleaning tile and marble floors can be an easy task, if you use the right cleaning elements. Both require care, as marble is a delicate stone while tiles and grout must be maintained by using mild ingredients. There are a variety of retail cleaning products, but these can often cost more than most people are willing to spend. Instead, make your own cleaning solution that will clean effectively without breaking the budget.

    Dish Detergent

Dish detergent is a mild cleaning agent that effectively breaks up dirt and scum, leaving behind a clean, streak-free surface. In a bucket, mix one gallon warm water with five squirts of a pH-neutral liquid dish detergent. Dip a mop or sponge in the solution, wring out excess water, and mop across the floor as you normally would. Dry with a towel or dry sponge, as air drying can sometimes leave water stains.

    Baking Soda

Baking soda is an inexpensive cleaning agent that is non-toxic, and friendly to tile and marble. In a cleaning bucket, mix a solution of one-half gallon warm water and two cups baking soda. Dip a sponge in this solution, and wring out any excess water. Wipe over floors and tiles, focusing especially on areas that have built up grime. For shower tiles with soap scum or mildew stains that are not easily removed, sprinkle baking soda directly onto the surface, let sit for five minutes, then scrub clean with a soft brush or cloth.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is another cleaning agent that will clean and disinfect without damaging marble or tile. Create a solution of 1 part hydrogen peroxide and part water in a bucket or spray bottle, then clean tiles and floors as you normally would. Spray the solution onto bathtub tiles, or dip and wring out a mop or sponge in a bucket solution. This will create a streak-free shine and remove any film that can sometimes develop on tile and marble surfaces.
