Some seeds need light to provide nutrients for growth and must only be covered with a light layer of dirt. As a general rule, the size of the seed should indicate how deep it should be planted. The larger the seed the deeper it should be planted. In drier or nutrient deprived soil, shallower planting should be used.

    On the Other: Deep Planting

Many seeds and bulbs should be planted a greater depth depending on size. Seeds often come packed with enough nutrients to germinate successfully without much sunlight. Additionally, seeds planted in too shallow a hole may not have the ability to take firm enough root before emerging at the surface.

    Bottom Line

Allow the seed size to determine the depth (the height of the seed should be roughly equal to the depth planted). If using seeds from a packet consult the growing instructions found on the side of the package. If unsure about the soil conditions or suspect the earth is very dry plant seeds at a shallower depth then their sizes might suggest.
