  • Kitchen cabinets are expensive to replace. The good news is that if you have non-veneer kitchen cabinets, you can refinish them for a fraction of the cost of new cabinets. If you are planning on refinishing your non-veneer kitchen cabinets, there are a few steps you can follow to help you get the best results.

    Remove the Doors and Clean

Before starting a cabinet refinishing project, it is a good idea to remove the doors from the cabinetry. Once you have removed the doors, be sure to also remove any hardware. Place the hardware in a safe place. Because kitchen cabinets accumulate grease and dirt, use mineral spirits to thoroughly clean them.

    Sand

Use a fine grit sandpaper to remove the polyurethane finish from the cabinetry. Sand with the grain of the wood to avoid hard to remove scratches. Once you have removed the finish, use a wood putty to fill in and holes or large scratches. If you are moving the hardware, or using a different hardware for the doors, you may also want to fill those holes.

    Stain and Finish

Apply a wood stain with a paintbrush. Once this is finished, let the stain dry. A polyurethane finish will help to seal the cabinetry. This should also be applied with a paintbrush, and may require two or three coats. Let the cabinetry dry completely before reassembling the doors to the frame.
