<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Some Homeowners Flush Yeast
Flushing one or two packets of yeast down the toilet every 1-4 months is a practice of some homeowners with septic tank systems, as it's thought to help break down material in the tank. But any benefit from its application has been widely dismissed by septic tank industry professionals as a "wives' tale"--and scientists agree.
On the Other: Yeast Can Actually Cause Problems
According to Environmental Management officials, flushing yeast down the toilet "does not help or hinder the operation of a septic system which is used continuously." However another expert in the field warns that "at best, septic system additives will only provide a very short respite from problems, and at worst, can increase drainfield plugging, as well as pollute the groundwater."
Bottom Line
Since any significant benefit of yeast-use in septic tanks is considered by many experts to be a "myth" that may actually do more harm than good, homeowners should simply flush their toilets regularly and have their septic tanks pumped every two to three years for best results.
