An all-wheel drive (AWD) is an automotive drive system (drivetrain) in which engine power is transmitted to all four wheels of the vehicle. Such a drivetrain is known to provide better control for traditional cars.
AWD vs. 4WD
Four-wheel drive (4WD) is the same thing as AWD. That is because the former term includes the number of wheels to which engine power is transferred.
4x4
The designation "4x4" means the same thing as AWD and 4WD. The first number refers to the number of wheels; the second number refers to the drivetrain.
4x2
Thus, "4x2" refers to a vehicle that has four wheels but with a two-wheel drivetrain.
6x6
AWD is not limited to vehicles with four wheels. For instance, a military truck with six wheels that has power transmitted to all wheels would be described as 6x6. This vehicle also has AWD.
Use
AWD is best known for its success in rally racing. However, AWD can now be found in many traditional vehicles as well as in SUVs and off-road vehicles.
