<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Healthy Hair
There are various brands of dandruff shampoo on the market. The right dandruff shampoo not only controls dandruff, but it makes the hair soft and manageable. Each person is unique and responds to shampoos differently. The best dandruff shampoo is found through trial and error. An article in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology details a study between pyrithione zinc and ketoconazole anti-dandruff shampoos. (Ref. 1.) Study participants preferred the pyrithione zinc shampoo at a 75-percent higher rate than the ketoconazole shampoo because of how healthy it made their hair look and feel.
On the Other: Allergic Dermatitis
Some people develop allergic contact dermatitis from anti-dandruff shampoo, which can cause scalp irritation and greasy or dry hair. The development of allergic dermatitis from anti-dandruff shampoo is rare, according to a study in the Contact Dermatitis Journal, and goes away when use of the anti-dandruff shampoo is discontinued. (Ref. 2.)
Bottom Line
In the absence of an allergic reaction, dandruff shampoo makes hair look healthier because it gets rid of excess oils and flakes on the scalp.
