  • Ponds are beautiful, tranquil landscaping water features that add a new dimension to gardens, yards and landscapes. A pond filtration system prevents stagnation and foul-smelling water, deters algae growth and insects, and cleans the water. There are different kinds of pond filters available, but what kind of filter is best for your pond depends on whether it is a decorative pond or a pond that supports aquatic plants and animals.

    Mechanical

Mechanical filters or pump filters are best for ornamental ponds without fish, turtles or other aquatic animals. This kind of filter will separate large organic matter like leaves and small twigs from water going through the filter. Mechanical filters don't treat the water, just clear it of particulate. They are not suitable for maintaining healthy water for aquatic animals. Pumps need to be regularly maintained and cleared of accumulated materials to stay effective.

    Biological

Biological filters use beneficial bacteria to convert toxic nitrites to helpful nitrates for aquatic plants. They usually use dual filtration, mechanical filtration as well as treating the water to remove toxins. They provide a surface area to house the bacteria and a pump to circulate water over the surface where the bacteria are to sustain them.

    Natural

Natural filters are achieved with pond design, using layers of soil, gravel, sand and aquatic plants to filter and treat the water and keep it clear and clean. They are more expensive to install and are a permanent feature of the waterscape. They can accommodate decorative ponds or ponds that are home to fish and other aquatic animals.

    Skimmers and Clarifiers

Skimmers and clarifiers are additional filter components for filtration systems. Skimmers catch debris on the water's surface to prevent it from accumulating and clogging pumps and filters. Clarifiers use ultraviolet light to kill algae and undesirable bacteria in the water.
