  • There is no doubt that safety is a top concern with your vehicle. Not only are the brakes a standard feature that stop your car from moving, they completely sacrifice safety when they fail or get worn down. Generally, brakes will need to be replaced every few years. Replacing your brakes when they are due can save you from a hefty repair bill or accident. Get your brakes checked regularly to catch replacement needs early. Depending on how you drive you car will determine how often the brakes will need to be changed.

    High Pitched Squealing

Most brakes will have a sound indicator to let you know that they need to be changed. When the brake pads become worn down, your brakes will make a high-pitched squealing noise. You can then visually check the brakes by looking through the rim. If the brake pad is worn down, see a mechanic to have the rotors checked and turned and the brake pads changed. Sometimes brakes will make the same noise when they have brake dust on them. Have a mechanic check the brakes to be sure this is not the problem.

    Grinding

If your brakes are making a grinding sound when you brake, it is time to have them checked. Chances are not only will the brakes need to be replaced, but the rotors also. Usually the rotors will last through three sets of brake pads if they are maintained properly and turned with every brake pad change. Bring your car to a mechanic to replace both the pads and rotors.

    Pedal

If the brake pedal gets closer to the floor than normal while braking, it may be an indication the rotors and pads needing to be replaced. The pedal moves closer to the floor because there is less traction on the pads, meaning they are worn down. Bring your car to a mechanic for an inspection and replacement of brakes and possibly rotors.
