  • There are many ways to delay your menstrual cycle. There are no ways to permanently stop your menstrual cycle through means of your own. The only way to completely stop your menstrual cycle is through natural or premature menopause, use of fertility pills, hysterectomy, ovarian failure or surgical removal of both ovaries. However, there are several medications available to manipulate your cycle's timing.

    Oral Contraceptives

Controlling the timing of the menstrual cycle is called menstrual manipulation. Many women chose menstrual manipulation out of convenience for things such as travel, honeymoons, dates and participation in sports activities. Menstrual manipulation is done by use of oral contraceptives. They will either cause the period to delay or stop completely, depending on the oral contraceptive prescribed by your physician. Oral contraceptives such as Seasonique, Yaz, and injectable contraceptives such as Depo-provera cause the menstrual cycle to stop for various amounts of time, which may last for weeks or months. There aren't many studies that show the long-term effects of delaying the menstrual cycle, although certain side effects such as headache, mood swings, leg cramps, acne, nausea, breast tenderness, acne, bloating, weight change and dark spots on the face, have been reported. Seasonale is a 91-day oral contraceptive that is designed to give you only four menstrual periods in a year. As with any other oral contraceptive regimen, there are active and inactive pills. There are 84 active pills and seven inactive pills. You will have a period during the last week of each pack, which is week 13. With the Seasonique pack there are 84 active pills taken over a period of 12 weeks. This includes seven inactive pills containing a low dose of the female hormone estrogen which causes menstrual bleeding. Using this low-dose estrogen instead of inactive placebo pills like those found in Seasonale, will cause bleeding to be lighter and also cause less side effects. Lybrel is a low-dose combined oral contraceptive. Combined contraceptives contain both estrogen and progesterone. Lybrel is made to be taken once daily for a year. There are no breaks and no inactive pills. Since there are no inactive pills and no drops in dosage, there will be no menstrual period. During the first few months of taking Lybrel, you will experience light bleeding (spotting) and bleeding that may actually require that you wear feminine hygiene products. According to Mayo Clinic four out of 10 women will endure this type of reaction.
