<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Square Footage Ratings
Dehumidifiers are rated much like air conditioners and will be sized according to the amount of square feet that the unit can handle. For example, you can purchase a whole house dehumidifier that will work for 1,000 square feet, or find a unit that is sized for an individual room.
On the Other: Proper Function
If you buy a dehumidifier that is not large enough for your needs, the unit will need to be on constantly. This wears out the motor and increases energy costs. While a smaller model may be cheaper, in the long run, you will actually be spending more money if it is not appropriately sized.
Bottom Line
When selecting a dehumidifier unit, it is best to go with a model that is more powerful than what you actually need. While this may seem counterintuitive, the unit will not have to work as hard to pull moisture out of the air and will function more efficiently--and generally cost less.
