Picking a lamp shade that is the right size for your lamp is quite easy. While there are no set standards for sizing, you can use your old shade as a guide by measuring across the top, middle and bottom. For lamps that did not come with a shade, you will have many size options.
On the Other: Fire Hazards
If you select a lamp shade that is too small, you could be faced with a fire hazard. The light bulb should always be more than 2 inches away from the material on the shade to ensure that it will not catch fire. Certain fabrics may be more flammable than others, requiring more space.
Bottom Line
Always read the warning notice on a lamp shade before installing it. It is better to have a lamp shade that is a little on the larger size than one that is too small. When in doubt, bring your lamp with you when purchasing a new shade to ensure a perfect fit.
