  • A "TV out" or "video out" port on your PC or Mac is a port that enables you to connect your computer to a television or other video display device.

    TV Out

If your PC or Mac has a special TV out port, then its video circuitry supports connections to a TV. In most cases, this means the PC is sending an analog signal that can display any TV. That enables you to show presentation slides or downloaded video from your PC on your TV.

    Types of Connections

Many TV out ports use S-video technology, which requires special S-video cables to connect the PC to the TV (or other video device, such as a projector). In other cases, you might have a yellow composite connector that requires RCA-style composite cable to connect to the back of your TV.

    Adapters

Not all TVs offer S-video input, so you might need an S-video-to-composite adapter, as composite inputs are more common on older TVs. Some video cards (and some notebook computers) offer other types of ports (such as Apple's DisplayPort) that have adapters for S-video, composite or other video technologies.

    Digital Output

Newer computers offer digital "TV out" ports in the form of HDMI connectors that can connect directly to HDTVs such as LCD, LED and plasma flat screen TVs.

    Screen Setup

How you set up your computer for external display depends on the video card. If the card supports multiple displays, it should sync to the TV automatically. Older PCs that don't support multiple displays may require that you set your screen resolution to 640-by-480 or 800-by-600 before connecting a cable from the TV out port to a TV.
