  • If you are considering a college education you're taking a step in the right direction. The average cost of public college attendance was $18,326 for the year 2008, according to The College Board. That's for in-state students attending a public college. With numbers like that you may feel discouraged before you begin. Don't despair as there is help for the determined college student.

    Federal Help

The Pell grant was established in 1972 to help people who couldn't otherwise afford to go to college. It is a federal program and the amount you qualify for depends on your income. The maximum amount per year is $5,340. Any surplus can be applied toward living expenses. You can apply online. (See resources below.) The Pell grant is a prerequisite for most other grants or scholarships you may apply for so get it done early. As an extra incentive, many states offer a grant when you complete the Pell grant process. Ask your financial aid officer at school about deadlines. The AC or Academic Competitiveness Grant is for students who show leadership potential and have qualified for the Pell Grant. There are a list of requirements and an application on the AC grant website. (See resources below.) The federal government also offers the SMART grant to students studying math, science or engineering.

    Community Grants

Most colleges and communities have foundations that house many grants from different sources. You can usually apply with one application and a committee will match you with the ones you qualify for. These have stringent deadlines, so act accordingly. Civic organizations of all kinds help with higher education. Peruse your newspaper for grant information. Scan the bulletin board at your public library. Keep your eyes open and be diligent in your search.

    Internet

Search the Internet for grants that you may qualify for. Jeannette Rankin has a grant for single women. The Philanthropic Educational Organization has a grant of up to $2,000 for women going back to school. If you're studying medicine or nursing, ask your local hospital if they participate in a grant program. Veterans' children can apply for a grant created expressly for them. Future Farmers of America offers $2,000,000 in grant money every year. Acquiring enough grant money to pay for your educational expenses will take time and perseverance on your part. Set aside some time every week to check available sources. Keep all of your financial information, transcripts and letters of recommendation together so you'll be ready when you find an application that you want to submit.
