In most cases, people are discouraged from using a car to transport anything besides humans and items inside the car. Many standard cars are not equipped to tow trailers, boats or other cars safely, and the driver might get a ticket for attempting this.

    On the Other: Full-Sized Cars

Some full-sized cars with rear wheel drive, such as Ford's Crown Victoria, are able to tow up to 2,000 pounds. In this case, the driver is still advised to equip the car with a proper hitch, avoid changing lanes, drive at half the posted speed and allow more braking time.

    Bottom Line

If you need to tow something, especially something that weighs close to or more than 2,000 pounds, rent a pickup truck or a large-bodied car that has an official tow rating. Do not attempt to tow anything behind a standard-size or compact car because it is not powerful enough for this task, and this can be extremely hazardous to other drivers on the road.
