  • Small bathrooms can be a perplexing problem for many homeowners. Lack of counter space and storage are two very common complaints. Trying to decorate around the clutter may seem impossible, but with a few tips and tricks even the tiniest bathroom can be tamed.

    Add Storage

The first step to decorating any room is to minimize the clutter. Space-saving options include over-the-toilet shelving, over-the-door towel racks, and shower caddies that mount in the corner of the bathtub. Consider replacing a small medicine cabinet with a larger decorative cabinet and using an organizer in the under-sink cabinet.

    Choose Light Colors

Dark colors make a small room feel even smaller, so choose light and airy colors to open up the room. The ceiling need not be white, but should be painted a lighter color than the walls. Cool colors, such as pastel blues, further open up a small room.

    Consider Texture

Consider a light faux finish on the walls. A subtle color variation works better in a small room than a harsh multi-tone effect. Faux finishing adds depth and texture, and can make the room appear larger. Test a small area to see if you like the effect before painting the entire room.

    Have a Focal Point

Even a small room benefits from a focal point to draw the eye. In a bathroom, common focal points include a decorative medicine cabinet or an interesting collection of candles. The rest of the room's décor should enhance rather than compete against the focal point.

    Create a Theme

Shower curtains, toothbrush holders, bath mats and other items are frequently sold in matching collections. Although there is no need to stick with a single collection, creating a theme for the room is essential to avoiding a cluttered look. If your shower curtain is heavily patterned, consider buying other items in colors taken from the pattern. If the room's focal point is a large cabinet, choose items in a similar style.

    Less Is More

Avoid the temptation to buy one of every available decorative bathroom item. Matching bath mats and toilet covers are cute, but can overwhelm a small room. Consider whether you need a large rinse cup, or if a small stack of tiny disposable cups would suffice. Choose decorative items based on functionality.
