If you have a green or black chalkboard, the easiest, cheapest, and most efficient way to clean it is with lukewarm water and a sponge. Chemicals or soaps are not necessary and may damage the surface of the board. Soak a sponge in lukewarm water; the larger the sponge, the more quickly the job will get done. Make sure it is adequately moistened but don't let the water streak down the board as that may leave streaks. Wash the board in columns, starting from the top and moving down.

On the Other: When Water Alone Does Not Work

If there are obvious scratches that remain on the board after it is washed, you may need to apply a new coat of chalkboard paint. This product is available at most hardware stores. Follow the directions listed on the product.

    Bottom Line

If your chalkboard is dirty, clean it with water and a sponge first. If it is still unusable, apply a new coat of chalkboard paint. Never use chemicals or soap to clean the board, as it may cause further damage to the surface.
