  • Advents in today's technology specifically with digital technology and closed-circuit television (CCTV) has made it easy and affordable for anyone to purchase and install their own home security system. Security cameras used to be big bulky and expensive, but now they have shrunk in size, are lightweight and very simple to install provided that you have a bit of basic know how.

    How to Self-Install Security Cameras

Find a suitable area for your security cameras on the eaves your house. You should ensure that the viewing area is unobstructed by tree limbs or leaves and that the camera is placed in a less noticeable area to avoid theft or vandalism. Typically, most homes are built with a small gap near the top of the wall and the joists of the house. This area is perfect for running the power cable through to the power supply. Use RG59 Siamese Cable to run power for your security cameras. This cable is the standard for all CCTV systems and can be found at most electronics stores. Buy the RG59 cable with BNC connections already attached to the ends. These connect your cable to the DVR you will use for your security cameras. You can buy bulk RG59 cable but you will have to separately purchase the BNC connectors and crimp them on yourself. Run the cable through the attic or crawlspace of the house and try to find an existing hole to run the cable through to the room where the DVR and monitor will be kept. You may have to drill a hole through the ceiling if you can't find an existing hole to run your cable lines through. Connect your RG59 cable lines to a power supply box and then separately connect the power supply to an outlet in your home. The power supply box acts as a circuit breaker and surge protector in case of electrical problems such as power outages or lightning storms. After you have a power source, connect the RG59 cables to your DVR and then connect the monitor to your DVR and plug them into a separate power source with a surge protector. If a separate power source is not available then you can use your power supply box. Modify the angle and focus of your security cameras after you have video on the monitor to ensure proper security viewing.
