  • A bladder infection, or urinary tract infection (UTI), can be very painful and frustrating. If left untreated, these infections could develop into kidney infections, which are more serious and could result in hospitalization. There are many ways to acquire medication to treat a bladder infection. There are also effective home remedies that can relieve symptoms until appropriate medications can be obtained.

    Over the Counter Medications

Over-the-counter medications are available to help relieve the symptoms of a bladder infection. These medications will not cure an infection. Cystex, AZO and Uristat are three over-the-counter medications for bladder infections. Cranberry pills are also sold over the counter. These pills will relieve your symptoms, but will not kill the bacteria causing your infection. Over the counter medications can be found in your local drug store.

    Prescribed Antibiotics

Prescribed medications, or antibiotics, will cure your infection by killing the bacteria causing your infection. These medications can only be obtained by seeing a doctor. Your doctor will give you a urine test to confirm the infection. You will then receive a three to five day prescription for antibiotics. It is critical that you finish all of the medication, even if your symptoms have subsided. This is the only way to ensure the bacteria has been killed.

    Home Remedies

Home remedies for prevention and relief of bladder infections include drinking plenty of fluids, drinking pure cranberry juice, avoiding coffee or sugary drinks, avoiding sexual intercourse, urinating frequently, wearing cotton underwear, wiping from front to back after urinating (if you are female) or taking a vinegar bath. To take a vinegar bath, use hot water and add one quart of apple cider vinegar. Soak in the tub for 30 minutes.
