In versions of Lime Wire prior to version 5.0, there was a potential issue with the software. Some users were allowing Lime Wire to share certain folders, or even all their files, unintentionally. This led to a number of people having their private information downloaded by other Lime Wire users, putting them at risk for identity theft. Lime Wire assures users, however, that they fixed the problem in Lime Wire 5.0.

On the Other: You May Download Malware

Even with the unintentional sharing issue fixed, users may still be at risk. Many of the files available for download from peers on the Gnutella network (the P2P network used by Lime Wire) contain viruses or other malware, and because of the nature of Peer-to-Peer file sharing, this problem is not likely to be fixed in the near future.

    Bottom Line

Though you may be able to decrease the likelihood of downloading malware by avoiding any executable files, there is no sure way to know the files you download are legitimate and safe.
