  • Computer RAM is a form of internal memory used to run active processes like an Internet browser or video game. Although adding RAM is generally an easy process, there are certain things to consider before purchasing more. These include: How much RAM your computer already has, how many open RAM slots your computer has, and how much RAM you will need.

Find out how much RAM you already have and what kind it is

To find out how much RAM is already installed on your computer, access "system information" from the start menu. This will pull up a window with a list of specifications of your computer. Click on the system summary tab. The entry after "Total Physical Memory" is how much RAM is installed. Your computer's owner manual or specification list should list what kind of RAM is installed. If you don't have either of these in paper, look up your computer online to see what is installed on it. One of these resources should also list the maximum amount of RAM your computer can have.

Check if their are open RAM slots

Consult your computer's owner manual to find out where the RAM and open slots are located. Most computer RAM chips are long, thin, and plugged directly into the motherboard. It is still best to consult the owner's manual to be sure you are looking in the right place. Make sure your computer is off, but still plugged in (this will ground it), and remove the cover to the computer case.

    Adding New RAM

Before adding anything, make sure the new RAM stick is the same type and speed as the one already in there. To add the RAM, lay your computer down on a flat surface so that you can easily access the RAM slots. There will be a small slot in the RAM stick that matches a solid line running across the RAM slot. Line those up to determine which way the RAM should face. Push the RAM stick into the slot, applying a moderate amount of force. Once the RAM snaps in to place, just close the computer case, and you are done.
