<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: The Soil Must Retain Moisture
Bamboo grows best in a fertile, loamy soil that retains moisture well. You can augment very heavy clay soils with organic material, and bamboos can grow well in red clay soils.
On the Other: Drainage is Important
However, bamboo doesn't do well in standing water, so soil drainage is very important. If your soil is retaining too much water, add organic material or silica to help with moisture movement.
Bottom Line
Although bamboo can grow in a variety of soil types, it needs a soil that both drains relatively well and retains enough moisture for these water-hungry grasses.
