Like a car manufacturer, Apple regularly looks at its line of iPods to find out what works, what doesn't and what can be improved. Rather than renaming a product when those changes are made, it simply updates it.
Time Frame
In September 2006, Apple released the second-generation iPod Nano; the original was released the previous year. The following year, the second-generation iPod Nano was replaced by the third-generation Nano.
Improvements
Among the improvements touted by Apple for the second-generation Nano is its smaller size, doubled-storage capacity, a new search and Quick Scroll function to make finding your music easier and a brighter screen for enhanced photo and album art viewing.
Models
The second-generation iPod Nano is available in 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB models and is available in silver, blue, pink, black, red and green.
Function
The second-generation iPod Nano is limited to playing music and viewing photos, whereas newer versions can also play and shoot video.
Size
The second-generation iPod Nano is 3.5 inches long, 1.6 inches wide, .26 inches deep and weighs 1.41 ounces.
Price
Upon release, the 2, GB sold for $149, the 4 GB for $199 and the 8 GB for $249.
