According to emedicinehealth.com, gallstones are solid particles that form in the gallbladder. The gallbladder is located in the upper right of the abdomen, right below the liver. About 80 percent of all gallstone patients in the United States developed them by ingesting meals that contained too much cholesterol, so high cholesterol can cause gallstones. There are two types of gallstones that can develop. Cholesterol stones are the type that form when a person has high cholesterol. Pigment stones are caused by too much bilirubin in a person's bile. Gallstones will produce symptoms depending on size and amount. If you know you have high cholesterol or eat a high cholesterol diet, you might want to see a doctor. While high cholesterol can cause gallstones, those that are taking pills to lower their cholesterol are at risk as well as these medicines can help to form gallstones. Gallstones that stay within the gallbladder do not usually cause problems. Gallstones that make their way out of the gallbladder can cause serious problems and even death if left untreated.Causes
