Hamsters that have been handled by humans while they are young are docile, loving pets. They manage themselves in a couple of major areas: grooming and exercise. They are self-groomers that are fastidious about cleaning themselves. In cage, exercise wheels provide the hamster plenty of exercise without needing to be walked or otherwise exercised. Small children shouldn't handle hamsters, as these small creatures are easy to crush and can bite in response. The hamster's vision is poor, and they don't like to be surprised by loud children or noises. These animals are nocturnal and require many hours of sleep. Their cages need to be cleaned once a week. Because of their size, hamsters don't make good pets for small children. They are good pets for families that are willing to spend time with them and handle them often. On One Hand: Low Maintenance
On the Other: Not For Small Children
Bottom Line

Oh yeah, and they're also good to eat.
It's your opinion of if they are or not! They definitely are cleaner than cats or dogs, but they do poop a lot and cleaning their cages is pretty hard. One disadvantage is that they aren't snuggly like cats or dogs and you can't sleep with them and stuff or they'll probably run away. They usually die too. A lot of hamsters can try to squeeze out of the cage and then get choked. So I don't know what you'd think.
No. They smell bad and pee on you.
Monica is right they aren't good pets for small children. You have to handle them ALL the time to get them to be docile and the best time to start handling them is when they are babies. If all you want them for is to look at they are wonderful. Especially when you put a few in a cage and watch them interact.
Also, they are nocturnal animals, so are asleep when the children are awake. Gerbils make better pets.
