<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Low Maintenance
Hamsters that have been handled by humans while they are young are docile, loving pets. They manage themselves in a couple of major areas: grooming and exercise. They are self-groomers that are fastidious about cleaning themselves. In cage, exercise wheels provide the hamster plenty of exercise without needing to be walked or otherwise exercised.
On the Other: Not For Small Children
Small children shouldn't handle hamsters, as these small creatures are easy to crush and can bite in response. The hamster's vision is poor, and they don't like to be surprised by loud children or noises. These animals are nocturnal and require many hours of sleep. Their cages need to be cleaned once a week.
Bottom Line
Because of their size, hamsters don't make good pets for small children. They are good pets for families that are willing to spend time with them and handle them often.
