  • With type 2 diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or the insulin that it does produce goes unrecognized by the body. To produce glucose for energy, insulin is essential. In the U.S., 95 percent of diabetics are diagnosed as type 2. According to the American Diabetes Association, "Thriving and living successfully with diabetes is achievable."

    Proper Diet

A healthy, balanced diet that includes fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins is important for type 2 diabetics. According to Stephanie Dunbar, director of nutrition and clinical affairs at the American Diabetes Association, "What you eat is key for managing diabetes."

    Saturated Fats

Type 2 diabetics should avoid saturated fats. Saturated fats come from dairy, beef and certain baked goods.

    Trans Fats

Trans fats also contribute to an elevated risk of heart disease. Trans fats are also labeled as "partially hydrogenated oils."

    Salt

Avoid or limit salt intake. Type 2 diabetics have an increased risk for high blood pressure. Too much salt can further increase this risk. Salt/sodium can be found in large amounts in many sauces, snack foods, canned soups, pickled foods, processed foods, ketchup, mustard and MSG.

    Warning

A sedentary lifestyle is harmful to diabetics. Find a consistent exercise routine and stick with it.
