  • Men lose their hair for a variety of reasons, some of which are clearly beyond their control. As a result, men may also lose their self-esteem. However, prescription drug treatments and other hair replacement options may help them to regain their hair.

    Male Pattern Baldness

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), male pattern baldness results in hair loss around the hairline and the crown of the head. Over time, the hair follicles decrease in size which stops the hair from growing.

    Causes

The causes of male pattern balding are not yet well understood. However, genetics seem to play a role, as do the male sex hormones.

    Considerations

Male hair loss can also occur due to an underlying illness. In 2000, dermatology researchers Hogan and Chamberlain stressed that other reasons for hair loss must be ruled out.

    Other Considerations

Less common causes of hair loss include adverse drug effects, nutritional deficiencies, head trauma, lupus erythematosus and structural problems with the hair shaft.

    Options

Unless a man feels uncomfortable with his hair loss, there is no medical reason why he must seek treatment. On the other hand, his physician might recommend a variety of treatment options, including prescription drugs such as Minoxidil (Rogaine) or Finasteride (Propecia).

    Other Options

Hair weaving, hair pieces or a new hairstyle are easy options. A hair transplant is another option, but not without some risk of scarring and infection.
