Dial-up Internet is a relatively outdated technology that is being rapidly replaced by its newer cousin: broadband Internet. Dial-up Internet has become synonymous with slow speed. Using a dial-up connection can be maddening, especially as download speeds can be extremely slow. Here's a few techniques to speed up your dial-up connection.
Use the Right Modem
It is important to choose the right modem to get maximum dial-up Internet speed. Your modem should conform to the V.92 standards. Most of the recently manufactured modems conform to this standard. To check the standard of your modem, look on top of it. It should be mentioned there. Built-in modems have this information on the modem card or the disk that comes with it. If you have a modem that's V.90 standard, replace it.
Look to Wiring
If your dial-up connection is still running slow, don't overlook checking your phone lines. Inefficient, old, and dilapidated lines often translate into slow dial-up speed. The quality of the cable used in the lines can affect the speed of your modem.
Upgrade Your Computer
Your dial-up connection is also linked to your computer. Computers should not be performing inefficiently. Sluggish computers can be caused by a hard disk that is almost full, slow micro-processors, viruses and malware and limited memory. Fix these problems and you will likely increase your dial-up speed.
Change Your Browser
If you're using an outdated browser when connecting to the Internet, switch to a faster one, such as Opera or Firefox. Try to do tabbed browsing, a feature that's available in Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera. This feature increases your speed because it minimizes the number of browser windows opened at the same time.
