  • Replacing the tires on your car should be done every few years or so, depending on how often you drive and the type of driving you do. Rotating and balancing the tires regularly is important for extending the life of your tires. Tires will show signs of when they should be replaced. Noticing these signs can mean the different between having a tire blow out or replacing them before it happens.

    Losing Air

The tire pressure can tell you a lot about the condition of your tire. You can use a tire pressure gauge, available at automotive parts and discount stores, to check the air in your tires. Checking air pressure regularly will tell you if one of your tires is leaking air too quickly. It is natural for tires to lose some pressure over time, but if you have to fill the tire with air every few weeks or less, the tire may need to be replaced.

    Tire Tread

A tread wear indicator system is standard on most tires. When the tread is worn down enough, solid rubber bars will be exposed. When these bars are exposed, the tires need to be replaced. Tread depth is another factor that can be checked for replacement. A tread depth measuring tool can be purchased from an automotive parts store. When the tread depth reaches 1/16 of an inch or less, the tire needs to be replaced.

    Visual Damage

If a tire has visible cracks on the sides or through the treads, exposing the inside of the tire, the tire needs to be replaced. Driving on tires with visible damage to the sides is dangerous and could cause the tire to burst. Take your car to a mechanic immediately to replace it.
