Horse hair loss has a variety of causes. Loss of hair on the body, mane and tail may be indicative of a disease, or it may be benign. Some hair loss is part of a natural seasonal cycle.
Sweat
A horse may experience hair loss when it perspires more than normal. This may be caused by exertion or consistent humid weather. Thin hair especially appears in the mane.
Shedding
When a horse sheds in the spring, bald or thin patches may occur. This is normal, as the replacement hair grows in at different rates.
Fungus
Hair loss can be caused by ringworm or a variety of other fungi. This type of hair loss most commonly appears on the face.
Abrasion
Hair loss may occur when a horse scratches a particularly area excessively, rubbing it bald. The behavior may be caused by allergies, irritations, insects, or general boredom.
Diet
Vitamin A and copper maintain a healthy mane and tail. When a horse is undernourished or vitamin-deficient, hair loss occurs in these areas. A horse's body is saving the vitamins for vital organs, instead of fortifying the hair and hooves.
