When used in tandem with other behavior modification practices (such as working with a therapist or trainer to understand why overeating occurs), hypnosis has been shown to aid in weight loss for some people. In individual case studies, many people have lost a significant amount of weight through the use of hypnosis as a form of psychotherapy.

On the Other: Scientific Evidence Is Scarce

Studies that document the use of hypnosis alone as a method of weight loss are few in number. Those studies that support hypnosis as a weight loss tool tend to pair it with a behavioral therapy or have methodological problems in their designs. Simply put, hypnosis by itself has never been clinically proven to affect weight in any way.

    Bottom Line

In some people, hypnosis (when paired with other weight loss techniques) has proven effective at reducing weight. For the most part, however, hypnosis has been shown to have little impact one way or another. Certainly there is nothing to be lost through trying hypnosis (except for money), but don't expect miracle results.
