If your baby is having difficulty with spitting up, abdominal pain or projectile vomiting, or if he is not gaining weight, talk to his pediatrician about his symptoms. He may be suffering from acid reflux, which is sometimes a temporary condition.
Change Feeding Technique
Help your baby handle gastroesophageal reflux by giving her smaller and more frequent feedings. Burp her during her feedings and hold her upright while feeding her.
Add Cereal to Formula
If your baby is otherwise healthy, add baby rice cereal to his formula in order to thicken it.
Alternative Feeding Methods
If feeding technique changes don't help, your pediatrician may recommend switching to a higher-calorie formula or feeding by nasogastric tube if your baby is not growing well.
Medication
Your pediatrician may prescribe H-2 blockers (Tagamet) or proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec). However, this could cause intestinal or respiratory infections.
Surgery
In severe cases, surgery may be needed if your baby's lower esophageal sphincter is weak. Surgery tightens this sphincter, so your baby may gag persistently during feedings following the surgery.
